I'Maya Gibbs: A Journey of Cultural Immersion and Artistic Growth Through Study Abroad

In the Fall of 2022, I'Maya Gibbs, a recipient of The Passport Portal’s 2022 scholarship, embarked on a transformative journey that expanded her horizons as both an artist and individual. The Case Western Reserve University graduate spent a semester studying at the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). There, she gained more than just academic knowledge—she absorbed invaluable cultural experiences that deepened her understanding of art, identity, and advocacy.

Reflecting on her time abroad, I'Maya highlighted how studying in London broadened her worldview and sparked her artistic evolution. "Attending classes at LAMDA introduced me to a diverse learning structure," she shared. "Many of my instructors brought their cultural roots into the lessons, creating a rich environment for cross-cultural learning." One striking example was her Spanish instructor, who introduced the students to the folkloric dance tradition of Flamenco, a style that resonated with I'Maya on a personal level. "I connected Flamenco to my own culture's dance tradition from New Orleans called 'second-lining.' Making those cross-cultural connections was a powerful experience."

For I'Maya, artistic growth was at the heart of her study abroad journey. Taking Shakespearean acting classes in the very city where Shakespeare's work was born, she visited Shakespeare's Globe Theatre and gained a new perspective on classical acting. "It refined my skills as a classical actress," she said. "Being immersed in the birthplace of Shakespeare's work brought new depth to my understanding and performance of his plays."

The impact of cultural immersion extended far beyond her academic pursuits. Traveling abroad for the first time, I'Maya embraced the opportunity to meet new people, experience different ways of life, and see the world from a broader lens. "Traveling opened my eyes to new cultures and perspectives," she said. "While studying abroad is a privilege, I believe it’s an experience every student should have. It fundamentally alters how you see the world and your place in it."

I'Maya’s reflections on cultural immersion reveal her belief in the transformative power of understanding other cultures. When asked how immersing herself in different cultures could affect her personal growth, she responded thoughtfully: "Cultural immersion would drastically impact my worldview, allyship, and artistry. Becoming culturally aware allows me to develop stronger advocacy for those communities. It would transform every aspect of my life, from my perspective on global issues to how I approach theatre and storytelling."

As a dedicated advocate for underrepresented voices, I'Maya sees cultural immersion as an essential tool for improving her allyship and advocacy. "Without fully perceiving other cultures, you can’t adequately advocate for them," she explained. Her personal experiences with friends who faced challenges as undocumented immigrants fueled her passion for immigration reform. "Hearing their stories forever altered my view and made me a strong proponent for their rights."

I'Maya’s artistic mission is equally informed by cultural understanding. As a theatre artist, she aims to illuminate the voices of underrepresented communities, and she sees cultural immersion as key to achieving that goal. "Working with diverse artists opens me to the distinct experiences of other cultures," she said. "Exploring characters' identities through theatre helps me accurately depict and revolutionize cultural narratives."

Her experience studying abroad not only enriched her artistic practice but also fueled her desire to continue growing as an advocate and storyteller. "Cultural immersion is integral to my personal growth because it influences my outlook, advocacy, and artistry. Understanding other cultures on a personal level will diversify my thinking and enhance my ability to create authentic, powerful stories."

I'Maya Gibbs’ journey is a testament to the power of travel and cultural exchange. Through her study abroad experience, she not only refined her craft as a classical actress but also deepened her empathy, broadened her advocacy, and laid the groundwork for a future of creating art that uplifts and honors diverse voices. The Passport Portal is proud to have supported her on this transformative journey, and we look forward to seeing the impact she will continue to make in the world of theatre and beyond.
